Abstract

The act of treatment has a decisive impact on the life and well-being of the patient. For this reason, patients should be able to make informed consents with as much detail as possible about the nature of the treatment to be applied to them and its subsequent consequences. In this regard, it has long been legalized in medical practice to obtain informed consent for surgery, and with the development of bioethics, the issue of respecting patient autonomy has been actively discussed. In particular, the discussion on realizing the patient's right to self-determination, which is a specific application of respecting patients' autonomy, has been progressing toward ensuring that patients can gradually reflect their thoughts, such as informed consent and shared decision-making, not just simple consent. Based on the discussions on the concepts of informed consent and shared decision-making, this article aims to make a clear distinction between these two concepts and further refine the concept of shared decision-making by examining its narrow and broad concepts of shared decision-making.
